Group size first. The solo, duo and trio lists only carry servers that publish those team limits. Then pace: vanilla, 2x, 3x and the rest are built from what servers put in their names or settings. PvE and roleplay sit apart from the PvP lists, and beginner servers are ones with lower pressure to learn on.

Choose by where and when you play

Region changes with the clock. The EU, US and AU lists show who is busy at the hour you read them, not at a fixed peak. If you want to join straight after a server resets, check servers just wiped and the next force wipe.

Every list is a shortcut into the full server list, which you can filter by region, type, group limit and wipe schedule. Positions come from live player counts, refreshed every five minutes. If a placement were ever sold, it would be marked as sponsored and kept out of the ranking.

How are the best Rust server lists ranked?

Each list is ordered by live player counts taken from Steam's public server list, refreshed every five minutes. No votes or payments move a server up. On a full list page the Rank column uses the past week hour by hour, so a server that is busy every day sits above one that fills only after a wipe.

How often do the counts on these lists change?

Every five minutes. A server that empties drops down its list, and one that fills moves up. The number of servers in each list shown on this page is also read live, so it can differ from what you saw earlier in the day.

Can a server appear on more than one list?

Yes. A 2x EU server with a trio limit appears on the 2x, EU and trio lists. Lists are built from live data, so a server lands wherever its name, tags or published settings match that list's rule.

Which list should I open first?

Start with the group size you play in, then the region you play from, then the gather rate. That order removes servers you cannot use before you look at population. Check the wipe timer on a server page before you join, because a busy server late in its wipe plays differently from one that has just reset.
